Program Description:
Ecotourism and Community Development in Peru. Tourism is the fastest-growing industry in the world. As tourism increases around the world, the environmental and social impacts of tourism can also be expected to increase. As a distinct form of tourism differing from traditional nature tourism and adventure travel, ecotourism provides funds for preserving land and water resources and the biodiversity they support.

Join Western faculty on this remarkable Exploration Seminar into Peru's Cordillera Blanca (White Mountains) and the Sacred Valley of the Incas, the Amazon Rainforest to investigate the issues of tourism and eco-tourism. Find out about the environmental and cultural impacts and how to help preserve the natural area.

Program Details

Study the impacts of tourism on the natural, social and cultural environments in Peru, one of the most diverse countries on earth with respect to bioregions and cultures. Learn how people participate in ecotourism as a strategy for fostering culture and conserving environment, through site visits in the Andes, the Sacred Valley of the Incas, the Amazon Rainforest, and Lima, and with alternative models for tourism development. 

Pre-departure and preparation seminars at WWU and online. (June 25 - July 12, 2014 )

Jasmine Goodnow
Goodnow earned a BS in Recreation Management/Youth Leadership from Brigham Young University and both MS and PhD in Parks, Recreation and Tourism with a specialization in adventure and ecotourism from University of Utah. Her research interests include the study of traveling for self-discovery and insight through the construction of liminality and ecotourism as a tool for cultural empowerment, local economic catalyst, and environmental conservation.
