Internships & Community Engagement Abroad
International Internships
Interested in gaining real‑world experience while exploring the world? An international internship lets you work full‑time or part‑time abroad for a few weeks up to six months, building valuable global skills while earning progress toward your degree.
To set yourself up for success, you’ll want to start planning at least two quarters in advance. You’ll work closely with a faculty advisor to make sure your internship aligns with your academic goals and departmental requirements.
Some departments have additional guidelines or requirements for international internships, so it’s important to review these early in your planning:
- International Internship Guidelines
- Health and Human Development (HHD) majors (including Kinesiology, PEHR, Public Health, Recreation), the International Internships Guidelines - HHD for more information about requirements and procedures.

Independent Study Abroad
Independent Study gives you the freedom to design a study abroad experience around your academic interests when similar opportunities aren’t available in the regular Western Washington University course catalog. You can complete an international independent study through a WWU academic department in partnership with the Education Abroad office, allowing you to shape an experience that supports your learning goals.
Because independent study is self‑designed, early planning is essential. Students are encouraged to begin planning at least two quarters in advance and review the Independent Study Abroad Guidelines for details about requirements, timelines, and procedures, and start your application.
Fairhaven Adventure Learning Grant recipients will complete a separate application.
