This three-week summer course will focus on archaeological museum studies in coastal northern Portugal. At the start of the course, students will visit an archaeological site classified as a Portuguese National Monument, where excavations are currently underway. They will then work with Portuguese conservators within local cultural heritage organizations to learn about conservation of archaeological materials.

Students will have daily opportunities for hands-on training in museum conservation and digitization (3D scanning) techniques, working directly with archaeological materials from the site they visited. Trips will include visits to the studios of local craftspeople who work with traditional ceramic production techniques, local archaeological sites, local history, and archaeology museums, and a guided walking tour of the nearby city center (Porto).

Expectations of Participants

With or without reasonable accommodations, participants must be able to walk for hours, climb stairs, and sit and stand for prolonged periods. Time sitting and walking will vary depending on the day. Days spent in the lab will generally require prolonged sitting and standing; field trips will generally require 4-6 hours of walking on uneven and/or hilly terrain. Activities include daily work in an archaeological lab, and field trips to the studios of local craftspeople, local archaeological sites, local history and archaeology museums, and a guided walking tour of the nearby city center (Porto). Field trips will require riding in a moving vehicle (bus) on winding roads. Weather can be very warm during the day and cool and breezy in the evenings in Vila do Conde in the summer.

Refrigeration is available in housing. Refrigeration will not be available during field trips.
