Study Abroad Fees

When you study abroad, you do not pay tuition at WWU. Instead, you pay a program fee. This fee is dependent upon the type of program you have chosen, and may be paid directly to the program or through your student account. In addition to the program fee, you pay administrative and insurance fees that also vary by program type.

Here’s what that looks like in detail based on the different types of programs we offer at WWU.

Program Fee

Instead of paying tuition or fees to WWU, you will pay a program fee based on the type of exchange program you participate in through WWU. The fee is attached to in-state tuition at WWU, even if you are an out-of-state or international student. This fee will be billed to your student account when you are registered and varies by program type.

WWU Exchange: You will be billed for a fee based on in-state tuition. Since WWU is on a quarter system, we take the tuition and fees paid by in-state students for the year and divide it by two, since exchange programs require you to be abroad for a semester or academic year. This fee will be billed to your student account. In addition to tuition, you will need to budget for out-of-pocket expenses, such as housing, meals, airfare, a passport/ student visa, etc. Detailed budget information can be found on each program brochure.

ISEP Exchange: You will be billed for a fee attached to in-state tuition. Since WWU is on a quarter system - we take the tuition and fees paid by in-state students for the year and divide it by two, since exchange programs require you to be abroad for a semester or academic year. Housing and meals are provided through ISEP when you are abroad, so you will also pay the cost of housing and meals on WWU’s campus. A fee for tuition, housing and meals will be billed to your student account. In addition, ISEP charges a application fee and placement fee for Exchange programs, which you pay directly to ISEP.

National Student Exchange: You can opt to pay in-state (resident/provincial tuition and fees directly to your host campus (Away Payment), or you can pay your normal tuition and fees to WWU (and no tuition is paid to the host campus) (Home Payment). Note: If you opt for home payment, you will pay the tuition and fees for the quarters that you are away from WWU. In addition, you will need to budget for housing, which can be paid directly to your host-university or landlord, as well as meals, travel costs, etc.

WWU Study Abroad Fees

This fee is charged to all students going abroad or studying away through National Student Exchange. It supports the operations of the WWU Education Abroad office, including salaries, communications, advising, applications, registration, support, and credit transfer. The amount is based on the duration of your program (see below).

The Education Abroad office is here to help facilitate your study abroad experience and can advise on which experience best fits your academic, personal, and professional goals. For credit-bearing programs, your EdAbroad advisor will register you at WWU to maintain your status while you are abroad, and so that you don’t have to reapply for admission at Western upon your return.

WWU International Health Insurance

WWU requires all students traveling abroad to purchase WWU International Health Insurance or its equivalent.

WWU Exchange: All students studying abroad on WWU exchange will be enrolled in International Health Insurance through the WWU Education Abroad office and billed via your student account according to the duration of their program (see below). Note: Some countries require you to purchase health insurance locally, however this coverage does not include coverage like medical evacuation and does meet WWU’s minimum requirements.

ISEP Exchange: ISEP enrolls students in CISI Medical + Global Assistance plan, which will be paid directly to ISEP. ISEP students do not need to purchase international health insurance through WWU.

National Student Exchange (NSE): If you are studying abroad in Canada through NSE, you are required to have international health insurance. If you are studying abroad in a US Territory (e.g., Puerto Rico, Guam, the Virgin Islands), you may be required to have international health insurance. If you are studying away in the United States, we do not require international health insurance coverage. In cases where WWU Education Abroad requires you to have international health insurance we will automatically enroll you based on program duration and bill your student account at the time of registration (see below).

If your program requires international health insurance, WWU Education Abroad will enroll you and bill your student account based on program duration (see below).

You can access your budget sheet for all active Global Learning Programs. We include all tuition, WWU fees and international health insurance in the advertised expenses that will be billed to your student account. Billable program expenses and inclusions vary by program.

Instead of paying tuition or fees to WWU, you will pay your program directly. These fees vary by program, and will include the tuition and fees to enroll in your chosen program. In some instances, you will also be able to secure housing through the university, so this may be a part of your program fee. In other cases, you may be required to find housing on your own (with the help of the university international office). Information on program fees and housing is generally found on your programs website. It’s important to make sure you budget accordingly for everything that you need during your time abroad.

WWU students pursuing any co-curricular or extracurricular international travel experience that is connected to WWU in some way must register their travel with Education Abroad (EdAbroad) by having an active Travel Plan in the EdAbroad Portal. This may include but is not limited to excursions as part of a class, internships, presenting at conferences, an athletic event, a performance, a student club/organization activity, etc., whether with a faculty/staff member or not. Please note, this also includes travel to Canada, including British Columbia. Although we tend to feel very comfortable making short trips into British Columbia because of its proximity, the moment you cross an international border, your rights change, and your U.S.-based health insurance coverage may diminish. For more information on support for non-credit programs, please see our webpage for faculty + students
